Founder of Shafer Insurance Agency
Alex was born in Bluefield, West Virginia. He came to Knoxville where he attended The University of Tennessee. It was there where he met Evelyn whom he later married. He was in the rental car business until Mr. Ed Fowler saw what a good salesman he was. Alex joined Fowler Insurance in the 1940’s. The agency was later called Fowler, Shafer, and Sims. When his son, Bo, got out of the Army in July 1963, Alex formed Shafer Insurance Agency.

He was on the School Board, Governor of the Knoxville, TN District Kiwanis organization, and the Leader of the Elks Club. In addition to his community service, he was continually involved in helping people. He was a wonderful father and husband. He died at age 59. As his son Bo says, “We did not lose him because when you lose something, you don’t know where it is. We know exactly where he is waiting for all of us.”
